Jersey City’s been fun, but I’m moving to Urbana-Champaign in May to work with Illinois Public Media as a politics/elections reporter. In a few days, I’ll be in Tucson, Arizona (a place I love) to see my oldest friend and my dad’s cousin.
I’ve been working on a lot of dynamic projects lately…I’ve put out short dispatches on psychogeography and Thomassons for Hua Hsu’s class, “Imagining the City.” For Afropop Worldwide, I’ve written about Mdou Moctar’s recent show at BAM and other cool happenings. I did a Q&A for Weedmaps with cannabis creative Mennlay Golokeh Aggrey, who’s based in Mexico City. I was on the great pod Disgorgeous (at the hour mark), talking about climate change and why young people aren’t drinking that much wine. And I’m almost done with a book review for Jacobin, so stay tuned for that.
What I’m Reading: I’m finishing up Min Jin Lee’s masterful “Pachinko.” I was interrupted with my book review of Ben Tarnoff’s important “Internet For The People.” I’m flipping through “Out On The Wire” by Jessica Abel in prep for my new job. And I’ve been listening to Colson Whitehead’s lyrical book “The Colossus of New York.”
What I’m Listening To: I’ve been lucky to see a lot of good music lately. I was at Tyler the Creator’s show at MSG. I saw Mdou Moctar and Moses Sumney (and L’Rain) at BAM. And I was at Parquet Courts at Brooklyn Steel on my birthday. Listen to DJ Harrison’s beautiful cover of Have You Ever Been. Omar Apollo’s new album Ivory is impeccable. Podcast wise: How Long Gone, Maintenance Phase, and Fresh Air.
What I’m Watching: I’m almost done with Insecure which is just the best. Partly because of class, I got really into this doc Battle for Brooklyn. I saw Everything Everywhere All at Once in theaters last night. It was poignant and wildly entertaining.
What I’m Eating: Eric Kim’s Roasted Chicken With Fish-Sauce Butter. I’ve been into Carolina Gelen’s Passover recipes: checkered matzo toast, pink deviled eggs, etc. I’m making lots of salads. My favorite restaurant locally is Corto. I went again with my sister and roommate a few days ago, and they just kill it every time.
What I’m Drinking: I did a tasting at Wild Arc Farm recently, so I’ve been drinking their awesome bevs – the orange and rose piquettes, Luca (a skin contact Traminette), and the Amorici Field Blend. Anything from Hudson Valley Brewing or Grimm. I had a memorable time at Pinch in SoHo. All the wines were incredible. Thanks to Miguel de Leon and all the guys there. And I’m alternating between beans from modcup and Southdown Coffee.
